Zuno Medical's Smart Container replaces disposable filter barriers with an electromagnetic seal, cutting costs and infection risks in hospital sterile processing.

Hospital sterile processing departments chew through disposables at a staggering rate. Every autoclave cycle means another filter barrier discarded, and in a mid-sized facility, that adds up to thousands of units a year. Zuno Medical, which launched its Smart Container technology on June 23, 2026, is betting that electromagnetic sealing can break that cycle entirely.

The system replaces single-use filter barriers with a seal that activates automatically during the autoclave cycle, maintaining sterile integrity throughout. Once complete, an external indicator light confirms the seal status at a glance. For technicians juggling dozens of containers at once, that visual confirmation removes a layer of guesswork and keeps the workflow moving without second-guessing.

CEO Allan McNichol has described manual container management as a persistent pain point in sterile processing — one that quietly drives up both supply costs and infection control risk. VP of marketing Aerienne Cunningham echoes that position, pointing to the environmental upside: facilities under growing pressure to reduce disposable waste now have a reusable alternative that doesn't require trading safety for sustainability.

The financial logic is hard to argue with. Fewer consumable components mean lower recurring costs, and a reliable seal indicator reduces the chance of a sterilization failure triggering surgical delays or, worse, a compromised instrument reaching the operating table. Patients benefit from tighter standards that are easier to enforce consistently. As healthcare systems push toward leaner operations, Zuno's Smart Container suggests that efficiency and safety don't have to pull in opposite directions.
